For a growing share of searches, Google now answers the query before showing the links — and cites a handful of sources by name. This guide covers how those citations are chosen, and the seven steps that make a Dubai business one of them.
An AI Overview is the generated answer Google places above the traditional results: a few paragraphs that respond to the query directly, with links to the sources it drew from. Google has stated that AI Overviews are built on its core search ranking systems — the overview is not a separate index, it is a different way of presenting what Google already knows and trusts.
AI Overviews run on English-language queries in the UAE. For informational searches ("how to choose a dental clinic in Dubai") they synthesise guidance and cite pages; for local-intent searches they increasingly name specific businesses, drawing on the same local data that powers Google Maps. Either way, the user often gets what they need without scrolling to the classic links — which is precisely why being inside the answer now matters more than ranking below it.
Google does not publish a checklist, but the observable pattern across queries is consistent. Cited pages tend to share four properties:
| Property | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Indexed and crawlable | The page is in Google's index and nothing blocks crawlers. Unindexed pages are invisible to the overview by definition. |
| Quotable | The page contains short, self-contained passages that answer a question directly — the overview lifts passages, not whole pages. |
| Consistent | The facts on the page match the Google Business Profile, directories and other sources. Contradictions make a source risky to state as an answer. |
| Corroborated | Independent sources — directories, media, review platforms — describe the business the same way, giving Google external confirmation. |
For local queries there is a fifth input: Google's local stack. The Business Profile's completeness, categories, reviews and proximity signals shape which businesses the AI answer names — the overview inherits the strengths and the gaps of your Maps presence.
Verify the site in Google Search Console, submit a sitemap, and confirm your key pages are actually indexed. This sounds basic; in our experience auditing Dubai SME sites, it is the most common silent failure — a page Google has never indexed cannot be cited, no matter how good it is.
Write headings as the questions buyers actually type, and answer each one in a short, self-contained paragraph. AI Overviews quote passages that stand alone; a direct 40–60 word answer under a question heading is the format they lift most cleanly.
Mark up the business with LocalBusiness or Organization schema — name, address, phone, hours, services — and FAQPage markup on question pages. Structured data turns your facts from prose Google must interpret into statements it can rely on. In our July 2026 Dubai pilot, 71% of testable restaurant sites had no structured data at all.
Every field filled, categories precise, hours current, photos recent, reviews answered. For "near me" and neighbourhood-level queries the AI answer leans on this profile at least as much as on your website — in our pilot, 60% of measured restaurants had no Google Maps top-3 presence for their own buyer queries.
Same name, phone, address and description on the website, the Business Profile and directories. An engine that finds two different phone numbers does not pick one — it discounts the entity. Consistency is what makes you safe to recommend.
Directories, local media, industry lists and review platforms that describe you the way you describe yourself. Google prefers answers it can cross-check; one consistent entity across many sources beats one strong page standing alone.
Run the same buyer-intent queries each month, record whether an AI Overview appears and whether you are cited, and keep the dates. This is the method behind our UAE AI Visibility Index, and it is the only way to know whether any of this is working rather than merely done.
| Commonly tried | Why it fails |
|---|---|
| Buying more ads | Ads can appear around AI experiences, but the organic overview's citations are not purchasable. Spend does not transfer. |
| Stuffing pages with keywords | Overviews lift clear, self-contained answers. Keyword-dense prose is harder to quote, not easier. |
| Publishing volume without structure | Fifty unstructured pages give Google fifty interpretation problems. One well-structured page that answers a real question outperforms them. |
| Waiting for excellence to be noticed | In our pilot, a venue rated 4.6★ across 6,270 reviews was never named by AI across five buyer queries. Being excellent is not the same as being legible. |
Indexation and structured-data fixes register within days to weeks. Business Profile improvements typically show in local surfaces within weeks. Corroboration and consistency compound over months. Treat the first month as making the business legible, and the following quarter as the window where measured citations begin to move — with monthly measurement as the arbiter, not impressions.
Our July 2026 pilot measurement of Dubai restaurants (published as the UAE AI Visibility Index) found that 30% were never mentioned by an AI assistant across buyer-intent queries, 71% of testable websites had no structured data, and 60% had no Google Maps top-3 presence for their own buyer queries. The competitive implication: most of the market has not started, so the businesses that make themselves quotable now face unusually little competition for the answer box.
